Kanwarjeet Paintal

Kanwarjeet Paintal Walia, celebrated by audiences as Paintal, was born on August 22, 1948, in the village of Tarn Taran, near Amritsar, Punjab. Raised in a Sikh family, his formative years were spent in Delhi’s bustling Sadar Bazaar. It was there that his passion for performance began to take root, eventually leading him to the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) to refine his craft.

Arriving in Mumbai in 1969, Paintal carved a distinctive niche as a comedic actor. His career flourished across both the silver screen and television, where he became a familiar and beloved presence. His versatility was on full display in B.R. Chopra’s iconic television epic *Mahabharat*, where he portrayed the roles of Shikhandi and Sudama. This project also featured his brother, Gufi Paintal, who famously played Shakuni.

Beyond his on-screen success, Paintal dedicated himself to nurturing the next generation of talent. In 2008, he served as the Head of the Acting Department at FTII, his alma mater, passing on the profound knowledge he had gained over decades. His legacy continues through his son, Hiten Paintal, an actor known for his work in films like *Dil Maange More* (2004) and *Bachna Ae Haseeno* (2008). With a career that bridges performance and pedagogy, Paintal remains a respected figure in Indian entertainment.
