Luc Jouret

Luc Jouret, a Belgian-born figure who would later gain notoriety as a religious cult leader, first made his mark in the political fringes of Europe. In the 1970s, he joined forces with Jean Thiriart, a prominent figure in the neo-Nazi Jeune Europe movement, to establish the Parti Communautaire Européen, a group that sought to blend far-right ideology with a pan-European agenda.

Jouret’s path took a darker turn in 1984 when he partnered with Joseph Di Mambro to found the Order of the Solar Temple, a doomsday cult that combined esoteric Christian symbolism with apocalyptic prophecy. The group attracted wealthy and influential followers across Europe and North America, with Jouret serving as its charismatic and fiery public face, delivering lectures on spiritual renewal and the impending end of the world.

His life—and the lives of many of his followers—ended tragically in October 1994. Jouret died by suicide in the Swiss village of Salvan, an act that triggered a coordinated mass suicide and murder of dozens of Order members in Switzerland and Canada. The events shocked the world and cemented Jouret’s legacy as one of the most infamous cult leaders of the 20th century, leaving behind a haunting reminder of the dangers of blind devotion.
