The Hanging Gale (1995)
In 1995, RTÉ One and BBC1 broadcast *The Hanging Gale*, a four-part drama co-produced by Little Bird Films for BBC Northern Ireland with RTÉ and the Irish Film Board. Set during the devastating opening of Ireland’s Great Famine in 1846, the series featured the four McGann brothers—Joe, Paul, Mark, and Stephen—in leading roles. The story originated from Joe and Stephen’s research into their own family history. Its title references the era’s landlord practice of granting new tenants a six-month rent grace period, expecting payment only after crops were harvested and sold.
