Fiery Sing Kwan, a fairy child, tragically meets her end after being accidentally harmed by the renowned general, Lee Ching. Three and a half years later, Ching's wife, Yan Sap Leung, gives birth to Nar Jar, a child capable of emitting flames, who is actually Kwan's reincarnation. Strange occurrences surround Jar's arrival, and misfortunes seem to follow him. Convinced that Jar is malevolent, Ching resolves to eliminate him. To protect her son, Yan fabricates a story, claiming he is a gift from Goddess Lui Wor. Ching sends Jar to reside at the Lui Wor temple, where the abbots pretend to be spirits to deter his mischievousness. Yan hopes for Jar's return home during Ching's fortieth birthday, and after careful thought, Ching agrees, allowing only a four-hour window for Jar to come back. If he fails, Ching will not let him return.
