David’s joyful childhood in the village of Blunderstone, spent with his mother Clara and their kind servant Peggotty and her family in Great Yarmouth, comes to a sudden halt when Clara marries the stern and oppressive Edward Murdstone. He and his sister Jane take over their home, imposing strict rules. Amidst this turmoil, David secretly becomes engaged to the lovely but scatterbrained Dora Spenlow, despite her father’s disapproval. Following Mr. Spenlow's unexpected death, David seizes the opportunity to marry Dora and begins writing his stories and newspaper columns. Yet, he can’t help but think of the lovely Agnes Wickfield, his steadfast friend.
