Following her inauguration, Vice President Natalie Maccabee is drawn into a hidden realm of peril by her chief steward, Malcolm Millar, and Chief Justice Caleb Thorne. Contrary to public perception, the role of Vice President is anything but ceremonial. A clandestine clause in a hidden version of the Constitution grants Natalie a personal secret agent, John Case, to be utilized during emergencies. When the daughter of FBI Director Stanton goes missing, Natalie is thrust into action as law enforcement struggles to secure her safe return.
