Yuri Zhivago, a budding poet and young physician, is on the verge of marrying Anna when he encounters Lara, a troubled teenager entangled with a politician, during her suicide attempt. Lara eventually weds the Bolshevik named Antipov. As World War I erupts, both Yuri and Lara find themselves on the front lines, tending to the injured.
