The unexpected death of a secretarial student and the shooting of a doctor seem unrelated, despite Morse's insistence on a connection. Chief Superintendent Bright, the newly appointed head of the Oxford City Police, is skeptical of Morse's enthusiasm and argues to Thursday that the role of bagman should be filled by a more seasoned Detective Sergeant rather than the inexperienced young constable. When a vicar is shot, Morse is relegated to menial tasks after dismissing a striking yet unstable girl as a suspect. Undeterred by threats of dismissal from his higher-ups, he persists with his investigation alone.
