In London’s Smithfield Market, a frozen corpse is discovered on a meat truck, accompanied by a forged British passport and a vellum page from an Arabic manuscript. Initially thought to be an illegal immigrant, questions arise about whether his death was accidental. The manuscript is identified as a highly valuable fragment of an ancient Koran. This leads Lynley into a clash with Inspector Brennan from the Metropolitan Police's immigration unit as they navigate the complexities of the case.
