After Jenny's baby is born, complications arise, prompting Ruth to realize she must find medicine to help her. Paul, now in love with Ruth, volunteers to embark on the perilous journey to Birmingham to fetch the necessary supplies. When he finally returns, Paul admits he's not feeling well. To safeguard everyone from a potential infection, Ruth isolates him in a barn while she focuses on treating Jenny, whose condition has deteriorated significantly.
